This semester-long course builds on students’ basic knowledge of classical Tibetan grammar and vocabulary and guides them through selected portions of classical Tibetan literature, introducing students to different genres of literature, both poetry and prose.

This is a university-level course and can be taken for academic credit through Kathmandu University. Three credits will be earned for its successful completion. For-credit students will be expected to spend approximately six to nine hours per week studying and completing assignments. If you feel that you cannot commit to this amount of time, you are encouraged to register for the interactive or self-study formats of this course so you can progress at your own pace.

All students have access to the course materials, which include videos, visual lectures, and supplemental learning materials, for 12 months. Interactive and for-credit students are able to ask questions of the moderator, have access to the discussion board and quizzes, and receive feedback on homework assignments. Self-study students cannot access the discussion board, or quizzes, and will not receive feedback on exercises.

By the end of the course, each student will:

  • Increase familiarity with Tibetan grammar by encountering it in both texts and lectures.
  • Become familiar with some common, and important, genres in classical Tibetan literature.
  • Increase classical Tibetan vocabulary.
  • Increase familiarity and fluidity with the classical Tibetan language in general.
